The Search for the President of the Soul Care Institute: February 2020
Over the course of the past three years, the Board of Potter’s Inn has taken seriously our need to help discern the future path forward for the entire ministry. In our work together and with counsel, we took a significant step forward in our decision making that we want to inform you about with this letter.
The Board voted in our January 2020 meeting to launch the Soul Care Institute into it’s own entity and to birth it out from under the umbrella of Potter’s Inn. The timing of this decision coincides with the retirement of Joe Walters, the current Executive Director of the Soul Care Institute, in June of 2020. Joe and June Walters have led the Institute for the last 5 plus years and have worked tirelessly to shape and grow the Institute into a nationally recognized and affirmed organization. To take an embryonic idea and see it through to where the Institute stands today is deeply appreciated!
The Walters, the Soul Care Advisory Team, the Staff and the students of the Institute as well as the professors who teach in the cohorts have all contributed to the wonderful success of the Institute.
This significant step in the Soul Care Institute’s development is important. Here are some of our thinking, reflection and guiding principles for this decision:
Steve and Gwen Smith are the Founders of Potter’s Inn. In our research and counsel, we learned that ministries and organizations that have strong founders have a greater opportunity for thriving and being sustainable when a new and different model is adopted
The Soul Care Institute will be launched, with the support and resourcing of the Potters Inn, as its own 501c3 non-profit, with a new President and its own Board to guide the Soul Care Institute forward in it’s growth, impact, and expansion.
Potter’s Inn has a history of launching new ministries with leaders who came to Potter’s Inn for training, mentoring and spiritual formation, who saw a new vision and felt ready to launch out to form new ministries. We see now that one of Potter’s Inn missions has been to birth new and like minded leaders into creating and advancing their own callings. The Soul Care Institute will now be launched after incubating, being developed, and established as a five year old ministry.
As the Smiths transition and re-position, we feel that this new model offers us an enthusiastic validation of the history, new vision, and God’s blessings! The Smiths will remain with Potter’s Inn, focusing on the podcast, intensives, resourcing soul care, and speaking as they feel led.
Having a new, distinct, and needed ministry such as the Soul Care Institute allows for attracting a new leader with a clear vision and a board that is fully devoted to this cause.
The Board of Potter’s Inn approved a Search Team to search for the new President of the Soul Care Institute. The Search Team is comprised of Joan Hall, Board Member and Chair of the Search Team, Katy Kloosterman, graduate of the Soul Care Institute and David Sachsenmaier, a former Team member of Potter’s Inn and Alumni.
It is the Board’s hope that a new President can be found as soon as we can. We will update you through the website and the newsletter. Please keep the ministry of Potter’s Inn and the launch of the Soul Care Institute in your prayers and we truly appreciate your support in every way.
The Search Team will process the applicants and conduct interviews and recommend a candidate to the Board of Potter’s Inn. It is our hope to have a President on board by May 2020.
