About Potter's Inn

Somewhere along the way, you may have lost a part of your soul. We exist to help you rediscover it.

Soul Care and The Potter's Inn

Soul Care is caring for the whole person. Every part of our lives matters. Everything about us needs care, and everything that is alive requires care to thrive—plants, animals, our bodies, and our souls. You are not the exception. We cannot live on auto-pilot—running on empty, feeling tired, depleted, and upset—and call that the abundant life.

Soul Care is about sustaining life and offering ancient pathways that lead to true life. We are not machines. For a life of meaning—a life that is sustainable and worthy to be lived—care is required. Care is the intentional practice of giving attention, grace, love, and cultivating resilience.

During a leader's time with us, burdens are lifted, hope is restored, there’s more clarity about their life, and they make decisions which begin a new life-giving journey that continues upon their return to their normal life and work. Their changed life exhibits newly learned ways to live an unforced and sustainable rhythm of life. This fosters resilience, helps them disengage, practice soul care, producing greater results at work and deeper personal fulfillment. Couples experience a shared hope and a shared love of God, marriages are healed and restored, and shattered marriages are reconciled and restored.

Depending on that leader’s circle of influence, this can mean hundreds or thousands of people further influenced by that one leader. The leaders influence extends our work even wider, deeper, further, even touching future generations of leaders.

Soul Care is the intentional practice of integrating all aspects of the human experience: physical, relational, emotional, sexual and vocational. These core aspects of our human existence form the real me—the real soul of a person. Each area needs care. Each area needs attention. As the Christian writer, C.S. Lewis says, “You do not have a soul. You are soul.”

About Stephen and Gwen

Stephen W. Smith was born in Charlotte, North Carolina but has lived, worked, and traveled across the world. Educated through the university and seminaries he attended, Steve has been mentored by the writings and voices of Ignatius of Loyola, Dallas Willard, John Phillip Newell, Mary Oliver, Wendell Berry, Roger Housden, Belden Lane, and other trusted souls that crossed his path.

The teachings and the ways of Jesus form the foundation of Steve’s insights and writings. Geographical places shaped his soul with great significance, including the red clay, beaches, mountains, and Pisgah National Forest of North Carolina. The beauty of the natural world found in Patagonia, Chile, along with the Rocky Mountains of Colorado inspired much of his writing and became primary metaphors to both unlearn and relearn the wisdom he has gained. Birds became his teachers and flowers his theologians when he retired from a life of helping others to care for their souls.

Steve and Gwen Smith are the founders of the Soul Care Institute, a two-year training program which helps people practice soul care. They founded Potter’s Inn and a retreat center to help leaders in the marketplace and ministry care for their souls. The Smiths have worked with individuals from over eighty countries in soul care. Steve’s books have been translated into multiple languages, while his podcasts contain the core of his teachings with interviews and messages about the spiritual life.

Inside Job

“In most of my leadership training, including as a Harvard MBA, the focus was largely outward—on assessments, strategies, results, etc.—with very little focus on me, my character and my spiritual formation. I’ve learned through the years, however, and often the hard way, that my leadership effectiveness in both Christian ministry and the commercial marketplace has much more to do with my character than my ideas. Inside Job shows us the way to lead more effectively from the inside out.”
Tripp Johnston

The Jesus LIfe

"Steve Smith cuts through the religious paraphernalia and daily clutter that obstruct our path to lives of purpose and power, and he clearly explains the Simplicity of the Jesus life in the Kingdom of god. he has deep insights into how we have come to live the way we do, in church and out. With refreshing realism and wide-ranging knowledge, he helps us identify dear illusions that bog us down and introduces us to simple steps and Arrangements that enable Eternal living. The directions he gives are self-validating. We have only to quote ‘just do it.’ The Jesus life would be ideal for real spiritual progress, and small groups and churches, and in community. Serious individual engagement with it will bring assurance that the life praised in our songs and scriptures can be ours."
Dallas Willard
