Meet the Potter's Inn Team

Steve & Gwen Smith

Co-Founders, President and Spiritual Directors of Potter’s Inn. Steve was educated at Lenoir Rhyne College, NC, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, KY; Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, IL. Steve has pastored churches in KY, NC and the Netherlands. As a speaker, spiritual director, author and companion, Steve offers soul care and spiritual care through many avenues. Gwen was educated at UNC - Charlotte, NC in Nursing and Denver Seminary, CO. She is a Registered Nurse and Spiritual Director. She is a retreat leader and offers spiritual direction and soul care. Steve and Gwen have been married since 1980 and have four adult sons and three daughters-in-law and a growing tribe of grandchildren! Steve enjoys a cup of strong brewed coffee and a brisk walk on a trail. Gwen enjoys dark, roasted, French Press coffee and a piece of dark chocolate in the afternoons. Their dog, Laz, is a constant companion and often welcomes guests to the Potter’s Inn retreat center.

Joe & June Walters

Executive Director of the Soul Care Institute and Soul Care Providers: Joe and June have three children and are proud grandparents of a host of grandchildren. Joe earned his MA in Theology from Fuller and certification in Spiritual Transformation from Northern Seminary and the Transforming Center. Joe served a 33 year career with Young Life providing leadership on an international scale. Then he served as the Dean of Spiritual Formation and Campus Pastor at Colorado Christian University in the Denver area for four years. Joe is serving at Potter’s Inn as Executive Director of the Soul Care Institute, offering his wisdom and experience to shape this important 2-year learning experience for leaders. June has been a ministry staff person, a spouse, a mother, a grandmother, and mentor to many over the years. She has uncanny “spiritual radar” and the unique ability to see past the issues that are on the surface and help plumb the depths of what lies below. Her countless hours of mentoring over the years are a huge asset to those she encounters through the ministry of Potters Inn, whether it is through the Soul Care Institute or leading Soul Care Intensives.

Duane & Sandy Hammack

Soul Care Providers: For 30 years Duane has been focused in the care of others in clinical out-patient/in-patient settings on an international scale, and now in the area of soul care at Potter’s Inn. Duane's professional training includes a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology, seminary training, and licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas and Colorado. Sandy has her Bachelors Degree in Nursing and practiced as an RN for 34 years while dedicating much of those years to East Asia and providing support and care for global workers in a member care role. Sandy earned her certification in Spiritual Direction in 2015. After serving for 21 years with the International Mission Board, Duane and Sandy moved to Colorado in 2016 to share their extensive experience with our team offering soul care and counseling to many leaders who need their shepherding hearts.

Dale Brooks

Soul Care Provider: For over 30 years, Dale has served in vocational ministry. She was on Young Life staff both here and abroad. She went on to direct Women's Ministries at First Presbyterian Church, Colorado Springs. She holds a Masters of Theology degree from Fuller Seminary. Her training also includes certificates in Spiritual Direction from Benet Hill Monastery and Life Coaching. Dale has a deep commitment to spiritual formation and places a high priority on relationships. Listening closely to the Holy Spirit is her way and personal transformation her desire. You can often find her enjoying the beauty of Colorado hiking, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. She is married to Howard who runs a non-profit in Colorado Springs, which provides energy efficiency for low-income families. Their son Chris lives and works in Seattle, WA.

Sarah Bedford

Office Manager: Sarah joined us in 2016 at the hub of our work to help us in the office keep everything running smoothly. She enjoys communicating with many of our guests while arranging lodging and details for those who come. Sarah also handles all of our contact management, mail, shipping of books, supplies and more. She loves living in the mountains and has lived in the area 22 years with her husband Troy. She has 3 children ages 21, 19, and 17 and stays busy trying to keep up with them and their busy lives! She loves being outdoors and enjoying the Colorado summers by hiking, fishing and camping with her family.
